The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
