Lando Norris edged out team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the points lead from Piastri by a single point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Before then, Piastri had been the leading McLaren for most of the session before sprint qualifying set to begin at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in the championship fight, sitting 36 points behind Norris, finished in 17th position as his Red Bull team followed a different programme. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to crash, albeit lightly, when he rotated at the fourth corner during the early running. Tsunoda spun out over the track edges before rotating through the gravel trap, and was blessed to avoid just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also lost it, at the conclusion of the session, turning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn approaching the final corner on to the pit straight. Hamilton ended the session in 19th place, one place behind teammate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car third fastest, 0.619 seconds behind the Australian's time. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
