Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
