The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
