All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew. The themes detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be. "That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'." The trio won a notable new artist list in 2013, and have subsequently secured several chart-topping albums. Evolution of Style That newfound confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before. For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums. "Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes. "'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound." I Quit refines Haim's signature sound, merging organic instrumentation with hip-hop adjacent beats and catchy pop melodies. Experiences and Collective Laughter The trio's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales. A former partner ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight. "Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible." The group recently wrapped up a lengthy tour, but state they aim to hit the road in the future. A Confident Future One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon. They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.
